Launching Stepping Up in Singapore

10 Collyer Quay, #30-00 Ocean Financial Centre, Singapore 049315
Co-hosted by ANZ and Herbert Smith Freehills

ANZ's Singapore CEO Vishnu Shahaney, and Herbert Smith Freehills Managing Partner, South East Asia, Michael Walter will open this event.

Pamela Young, author and Managing Director of growthcurv, will briefly outline her global journey and highlight the key findings of her research of 100 leaders from across Australia and Asia as presented in her book Stepping Up.

Pamela's Story

Pamela first observed the impact that country cultures and diversity in leadership have on the bottom-line during her first Fly In Fly Out consulting experience in Singapore between 1992 and 1994.

Hungry to learn more, she moved to Singapore full-time in 1996 to take up the inaugural role of Executive Director of Shook Lin & Bok. During this time as expat and immigrant, she developed a great respect for the distinctive qualities of the hundreds of Asian and international cultures represented there.

The contrast between East and West was highlighted on the next leg of her global journey. Five years working across Europe from a London base shed light on the many wrong assumptions we make about 'other people'. Pamela noticed how willingness and ability to adapt to change, and the pace of work, differed between Asian and European nations. Attitudes to diversity and inclusiveness varied from country to country. Anticipated social development and economic performance were not always what they seemed.

'So what?' some people might say. Well, Pamela observed 'These differences can aid or hinder productivity and growth'. Understanding how they impact the bottom-line is key to unlocking opportunity in the Asian century.

Stepping Up was written to help leaders across Asia and Australasia identify the hurdles along their growth curve. Pamela combines research with 100 leaders from 16 cities across the region with 28 years of experience gained from four corners of the world. Her frameworks for shifting – cultures  country, organisation and individual – are outlined in her book.
