Robert Care is a globally experienced, male CEO of senior ranking so he might be one of those people referred to by critics as ‘male, pale and stale’. He is indeed male, Caucasian and could be referred to as ‘middle aged’, but he is very definitely focused on achieving gender equality in his workplace as this quote from him, reported in Stepping Up, indicates “We have had (gender) discrimination for over 200 years in Australia so a little bias the other way is okay”. Read More...

With the announcement of Tony Abbott's cabinet last week, Rosa Parks came to mind. She was the African-American woman who refused to give up her seat to a white person on 1 December 1955. Her defiance served to rally black leaders from all around America to lead change in what became known as the ‘bus boycott’. It lasted until 20 December 1956 when a federal ruling that segregation on buses was unconstitutional. From that day forward, the rights of African-America people changed forever. Read More...

How many people do you know who, at the age of 14, started selling burgers and then after 13 promotions over 26 years now run 870 restaurants employing 90,000 people? How many aeronautical engineers from Boeing would you expect to find running supply chain in a food business? How many HR managers do you know who own McDonald's Franchises? 'Pamela, why is everyone getting on the diversity band-wagon?' a Group Human Resources Director asked me back in 2010. 'Odd,' I thought, given that the inquirer belonged to a segment of our society that Diversity Council Australia says represents 'diversity'that being the gay and lesbian community. I pondered for some time, why this person, who I had expected to have a personal interest in achieving diversity and equality, would make such a disparaging remark about those trying to help.
